WHAT TO EXPECT
I want my clients to know what to expect when they come to a photo session. If you are planning to, or already have booked a photo session I imagine you may have some questions. I thought I would go over how my sessions usually flow so that you would know what to expect and how to plan for your photo shoot.
With a few exceptions, our session will take place outside and in a predetermined location.
This is most often the beach or a park, but I do have some other locations in mind, including urban settings, if that is not your style. We will usually try to choose a place that will give us multiple options for backgrounds during your session and that will provide us with some beautiful backdrops. If you have suggestions about locations, don’t be shy! Speak up! Of course, I want your shoot to be in a location you enjoy, but I will let you know if your choice poses significant challenges for perfect photos. However, many of my favorite locations were originally client inspired!
Some clients want photos done at their home and that is perfectly fine. Other clients request indoor sessions for children using studio lighting. However, I do all of my photography using natural light with a little bit of flash when needed. I strive to capture moments that are honest and artistic while paying close attention to how the natural light captures the mood and emotion.
My style, as you have seen while browsing through my website, is a mix between lifestyle and posed photography. I will try to capture many photos of my subject(s) interacting, having fun, walking around, etc. Additionally, I will spend some time on posed photography to get an interesting, yet more traditional family photo. If you want something else, feel free to ask! Your input is essential to a successful photo shoot.
LENGTH OF SESSIONS
Our session will usually last between 1-2 hours, depending on your preferences and package choice.
I tend to run on the long side of time. I find that it makes for a less stressful session if we give ourselves permission to spend a couple of hours together. Rushed photography rarely captures the moments you desire. Depending on the type of session we are doing, we may be shooting at more than one location. Most often we are at least covering a few spots within a larger location and will want to allow time to get around.
[Due to the length of the sessions, please bring snacks, especially if you have little ones in your group, in case someone is hungry.]
TIME OF DAY
All of my outdoor sessions are in the few hours before sunset or in the couple of hours following sunrise. This is when the BEAUTIFUL light happens.
This does not mean that I never do sessions at time other than these, but I am aware that these times lend themselves to finding some beautiful light and I usually strive for that.
WHAT TO BRING
I like to personalize my sessions by asking clients to bring something that would make sense to have in your photo with the person/people being photographed.
If this is a child/family, I suggest bringing their favorite lovey or stuffed animal or their favorite book. I often take a “break” in posing to incorporate these during a moment of play or reading. These are often some of our favorite shots.
For couples, I find that it is fun to incorporate something that they have in common or that they might do together: reading books, playing scrabble, having a picnic, or taking a walk
Seniors are more used to this and will often come with something that they feel represents their interests at that time. If you play music, bring your guitar. If you draw, bring a sketch book with some of your work and a pencil. If you participate in anything in school, you may want to wear a uniform for a small portion of your senior session.
Maternity sessions can be fun because parents will often bring a small pair of shoes or some blocks. It is always nice to bring something that they are saving for the sweet baby.
Regardless of what kind of session we are doing, we will discuss some of these details beforehand and come up with some fun ideas for things to do during your shoot.
Get ready to laugh, snuggle up, and have fun!
I am known for making my clients snuggle and gaze into each others eyes. This may sound silly, but I find that this kind of connection loosens clients up and makes them laugh. If I can make my clients feel like their photo session was a fun experience and their images capture those moments, then I am reaching my goal.
AFTER THE SESSION
You can first expect to see a sneak peek on the blog + Facebook within a week. This will only be a few images, but will give you an idea of what you will see in your full set. A few weeks after that (sometimes sooner) you will get an email with a link to your online, password protected gallery of images. From here you can sign in and view your whole set, and decide what you would like to order in print or as digital files.
WHAT TO WEAR
Wondering what you should wear? I have a whole post dedicated to that here.
